Pathways to a masters degree

You can graduate with a Master of Health Administration in approximately 2 years part-time accelerated, after completing 12 units (72 credit points).

You can also exit the course after completing approximately:

  • 0.7 years part-time accelerated, 4 units (24 credit points), and you’ll receive a Graduate Certificate of Health Administration; or
  • 1.4 years part-time accelerated, 8 units (48 credit points total), and you’ll receive a Graduate Diploma of Health Administration*

*Exit point only

The course is structured in 12 units.

Entry level 1 – 72 points to complete. Duration: 2 years part time.

An Australian undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline* with at least a credit (60%) average,

AND a minimum of two years of relevant management experience**

*Relevant cognate disciplines include; medical, nursing, allied health, (other health related degree e.g. chiropractic, psychology, public health, environmental health, paramedic, imaging (radiology, nuclear medicine), biomedical engineering, dietetics/nutrition, pharmacy, social work, medical science/biomedical science/immunology, health science, laboratory science, science, and health economics); or economics, law, or business

**Relevant management experience in the field of health and public health administration in the health industry, e.g. government, policy, provider such as hospital, clinic, or non-government organisation.

Entry level 2 – 48 points to complete. Duration: 1.4 years part-time

A Monash University Graduate Certificate of Health Administration (M4005) with at least a pass (50%) average.

Additional selection criteria

Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae (CV), or a statement from employer to substantiate period of employment.

The Master of Health Administration is not currently accepting international applications.

For the Master of Health Administration, the estimated cost is $4,125.00 per unit. You may be eligible to receive a FEE-HELP loan to cover part or all of your tuition. Fees are subject to change annually.

The Master of Health Administration is accredited by The Australasian College of Health Services Management (ACHSM) and covers all core master’s subject area requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administration’s (RACMA) Fellowship Training Program.

Meet your academic team

Dr Chris Moran

Dr Moran obtained his medical degree in Northern Ireland and is now involved in physician training, specialising in Geriatric Medicine in Melbourne. He has also completed his PhD at Monash University and is now the Co-Course Director of Master of Health Administration and Master of Health Management.

Professor Peter Bradford

Dr Bradford has a medical degree, a Masters in Public Health, and Fellowships in two Colleges relating to Medical and Hospital Management. He has had 35 year career, most recently as Executive Director Clinical Governance and Medical Services at Melbourne Health (The Royal Melbourne Hospital) and prior to that in similar roles in remote, rural, outer metropolitan, and teaching hospitals in Victoria and the Northern Territory.

Dr Margaret Way

Dr Margaret Way is currently the Director of Safety, Quality and Improvement at Barwon Health in Victoria. She was an inaugural recipient of a Victorian Quality Council Travelling Fellowship and established the Clinical Governance Units at Austin Health and Alfred Health in Victoria and the Innovation, Quality, Research and Education (IQRE) Directorate at the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service in Queensland.

Professor Ian Rouse

Professor Rouse has a diverse career working in both Higher Education and Industry. He has a passion for Education, Global Health and people empowerment and brings a wide range of leadership, management and interpersonal skills developed in senior management roles in information, analysis and research organisations, tertiary institutions, government departments and community organisations.

Professor Cathy Mihalopoulos

Professor Cathy Mihalopoulos is head of the inaugural Monash University Health Economics Group (MUHEG) within the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University. She is nationally and internationally recognised for her expertise in the use of economic evaluation techniques (both within trial and modelled), particularly within the context of mental health. Within Australia, she leads the largest group of academic health economists specialising in the economics of mental health and psychosocial care, consisting of staff funded entirely on research income.

I have enjoyed interacting, learning and engaging with like-minded people the most. These interactions have given me motivation and inspiration to keep going and quench my thirst for further knowledge as well as advance my professional career.
